Week 1 Lecture reflection

Future Scenarios and Architectural Fiction

We have been talking about what is the future be in the future. All of us have an idea of that, however, there are numerous unknown factors that can vary our vision to the future. A lot of researches has to be done before answering this question. This is a very broad and profound question.

There are lots of issues that we have to look at, for instance, political, climate, technology, social cultural, economical, etc. As an designer/architect, we take a very unique role in the society. What is the appropriate design that suit for the future? What we are designing today, is going to influence the people who are occupying it.
What we are designing, is for the needs of tomorrow.

Image 1. Future scenario

What is the world going to be? Are we still going to using fossil fuels? What will be the political system in the future, communisum ? capitalism?  How advance can the technology goes? An architect requires a thorough understanding of the future context and how the architectural outcome that influencing the people.

Week 1 Development logs and reading reflection

Future World

There are 7 billion people on Earth today and is continuously increasing the population with three new babies born every second. Natural resources can no longer able to support such a huge population with the lifestyle that we are having now. The rapid growth of population has already caused a lot of environmental issues which included ocean acidification, environmental degradation, loss of bio-diversity, lacking of fresh water, global warming.

Image 1
While there are limited resources, the world government has started a secret program to gradually decrease the growth of population. They have introduced the bio-engineering food which affect the human reproduction system. This is a highly confidential program and some of the countries are against with this inhuman program. With the limited time of running out of resources, there is no compromise between these countries. Countries support this program started the war and shot atomic bombs to those against them.

Major Cities with high population density
was targeted and large amount of civilians was dead. In fact, there are only 2 billion people still alive on Earth after the war. After several rounds of negotiation, countries finally agreed on a cease-fire to avoid greater violence and further deterioration. While major cities have been affected by the nucleation, some civilians moved to 10 meters underground and some of them migrate to other undeveloped area.

Week 1 Readings
Beyond Architecture: Indeterminacy, systems, and the Dissolution of Buildings
Reading 1
The technology today is so advanced compare to the the year of 60s. In the 60's Archigram suggests merging architecture and industrial design, 60's people predict what is it going to happen in 2010s. Our architecture are now emerging with the industrial element, such as the air exhaust system, the plumbing system, elevator system and without these industrial elements, it is not possible for us to build any skyscraper or even an airport. The human imagination has always push the extents of the design and stretched further than the limits of the environments.

Reading 2
The story is very interesting. It is mainly focuses on the issues on world's economic, social and political future. This story has demonstrated details of the event  and the complexity of the economics which made the reader easier to get into the story. And this leads me to consider what is it going to happen in the future in terms of political and economical. As the centre of the economic is shifting from west to east, what role does Australia take in order to stay competitive? How will these influence the city planning and architecture of Australia?
This is going to be a very interesting topic to be researched on.
